In this blog post, you'll find out what a trip to the Birs River with Bob's Flies is like and how our experience went. To give you a preview – GREAT DAY, AMAZING FISH, and suddenly a wild boar!

Be sure to visit the Birs!

With this sentence, our ProTeam member Claude Kleiner invited us to visit him at the Birs river back in January 2022 (admittedly, for about the fifth time). Since finding a suitable date wasn't easy for everyone involved, it took a little longer than expected. Fortunately, we were finally able to agree on a date – Ascension Thursday.

Who would have thought it? On Ascension Thursday, when the whole of Switzerland is queuing at the Gotthard Pass to get to Ticino, the people of Graubünden are heading to Basel. So we set off early in the morning and arrived in the heart of Basel shortly after 7:30. The streets were almost deserted, as if everyone was still in bed or already at the Gotthard.

Claude recharged, made a quick visit to the petrol station and then headed to the water.

Birs – «Let's Go!»

In the morning, we set out on various stretches of the river for Euro-Nymphing, searching for magnificent brown trout and grayling. Claude, being a local, knew exactly how and where to find them. It wasn't long before we had our first fights on the Birs River. Besides fly fishing, there was plenty to talk about, from the best flies to the most exciting experiences of the past season. In short: a classic fly-fishing day among friends.

Around midday, as we were walking through grasses over a meter high along a stretch of river, Claude turned towards the riverbed – and a wild boar suddenly bolted out 10 meters away from him. Fortunately, it didn't head in our direction, but further downstream. So everyone involved could breathe a sigh of relief and get back to fly fishing.

A cozy get-together

For our lunch break (which took place at 4:00 PM), we grabbed the Lotus Grill, sausages, salad, and bread. We reflected on the day over a cool drink, watched a mayfly hatch, and relaxed to end the day.
